Chevy Chevelle History
The Chevrolet Chevelle (pronounced “shev-EL”) is a mid-sized car from Chevy which debuted in 1964. It was built from 1964 until 1977 and was one of GM’s most successful cars. Chevelle models ranged from economical family cars to powerful muscle car coupes and convertibles.
The Chevelle was developed to compete with the similarly sized Ford Fairlane.
Four-door hardtop sedans, dubbed Sport Sedans, were available from 1966 though 1972. A two-door station wagon was available in 1964 and 1965 in the base model Chevelle 300 series. Two-door hardtop coupes and convertibles were produced from 1964 until 1972, while four-door sedans and four-door wagons were offered through all years of the model. Various models of wagons were sold with exclusive nameplates: Nomad, Nomad Custom (1968), Greenbrier, Concours, and Concours Estate. In line with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sport Coupes.
The Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet’s entry into the hot mid-size muscle car battle. The Chevelle SS was the high performance version of Chevrolet’s Chevelle, and had its own line of engines and performance equipment. The Chevelle SS would soon sport a powerful 396 V8 and eventually the most powerful rated engine in muscle car history, the LS6 454 in 1970. The Chevelle, along with the Pontiac GTO remain one of the most popular cars from this era and with good reason. Its strong performance at a reasonable price made it popular on the street and at the track.
Most Chevelle SS model options were: sport steering wheel, bucket seats and a higher grade trim level. A brightly trimmed console with floor shifter was offered with the optional Powerglide automatic or Muncie 4 speed. A set of four gauges (temperature, ammeter, oil and fuel) replaced the base Chevelle’s idiot lights. There were 15 color choices available for the 1964 SS. Convertible tops came in white, black and beige. Interior trim was offered in saddle, black, aqua, fawn, red and white and red.
A utility pickup produced from the wagon design, the El Camino, was part of the lineup and, depending on the year, was available in 300/300 Deluxe trim level, Malibu trim level and the one-year only SS396. The El Camino outlived its passenger car counterpart until its demise in 1987.
